Friends of Baxter State Park is inviting high school sophomores and juniors to submit applications to participate in the 5th annual Maine Youth Wilderness Leadership Program.
The program, which involves more than a week of backpacking through Baxter State Park, is scheduled for August 3-11. The application deadline is Feb. 8.
Accompanied by experienced wilderness leaders from the Chewonki Foundation, participants work with a variety of specialists as they backpack from one end of Baxter State Park to the other, camping at different sites, including three nights in the backcountry at Russell Pond.
Only students who are sophomores or juniors at the time that applications are due are eligible to apply.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
