FREEPORT
If your car is towed in Freeport, getting it released may cost a bit more than it used to.
Town officials approved a change to Freeport’s ordinance Tuesday, allowing for flexibility to pass on fee increases to towing victims when necessary.
Both of the Freeport’s full-time wrecker services have gone out of business, leaving local police to rely on companies that operate out of Brunswick and West Bath.
Freeport and Brunswick charge the same basic rate — $75 during the day, $85 at night — but Brunswick charges more for vehicle storage, the meter for which starts ticking as soon as the wrecker driver hooks up to the car being hauled.
Additionally, Brunswick’s minimum call-out fee is half of the towing charge, while Freeport’s is $15 during the day and $25 at night.
