BRUNSWICK
The authority to approve or deny destruction of buildings in an area noted for historical and architectural values now rests with the Planning Board — at least until June 1, 2013.
Town councilors voted 8-1 Monday, with Benet Pols in opposition, to temporarily change the demolition review process for the Village Review Overlay Zone.
Previously, decisions rested solely with the Village Review Board. But officials say the existing review process is vague, and members of the Village Review Board said they were uncomfortable making decisions on their own.
The change gives the respective boards six months to revise town ordinance. The Planning Board becomes the temporary governing body, relegating the review board to advisory status.
If the policy is not reworked by June 1, 2013, the Village Review Board once again becomes the body of record.
Also Monday, councilors set a Jan. 22 public hearing on proposed parking revisions on Maine Street.
Among the changes proposed are increasing the overtime parking fine, reducing several spots from two hours to 30-minutes-only and installing raised crosswalks.
