Maine’s 60 newest police officers were minted Friday after graduating from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro.
The officers from the state, county and municipal ranks graduated after 18 weeks of study and training. Several of the officers will taker posts in Mid-coast law-enforcement agencies, including:
— Shaun Cavanaugh, Bath Police Department;
— Charles Reece and Mark Steele, Brunswick Police Department;
— Nicholas Mangino, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office; and
— Michael Laurence, Topsham Police Department.
Also earning certification were Johnathan Luellen of Guilford and Matthew Merriman of Grand Junction, Colo., who are joining the Maine Marine Patrol.
Graduates from Maine State Police include Erin Ball of Lisbon. But trooper recruits have an additional eight weeks of specialized Maine State Police training, which begins in February.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
