A Gardiner man suffered minor injuries Monday when his vehicle skidded across slippery Washington Street, through a chain-link fence and into a utility pole, police said.

William Cressey, 37, suffered head lacerations, according to Lt. Stan Cielinski. His brother took him to a local hospital for treatment, Cielinski said.

Cielinski said that Cressey was traveling along the north end of Washington Street at 3:27 p.m., when he lost control of his 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a curve.

There was minor damage to the fence, and Central Maine Power Co. declared that the utility pole was safe, Cielinski said.

A man who had left his locker door open Monday afternoon at the local YMCA is missing two credit cards and a debit card, Cielinski said.

One of the credit cards has been used, and the case remains under investigation, the lieutenant said.
