CASTINE — A 20-year-old Maine Maritime Academy student suffered minor injuries after a one-car accident in Castine on Monday, the result of drunken driving, according to police.
Stefan Clugston of South Freeport was summonsed on charges of operating under the influence and violation of conditions of release.
Clugston was driving on Water Street around 10:45 p.m. Monday, according to a Hancock County Sheriff ’s Office report by Deputy Scott Kane.
At some point, he crossed the center line and drove into a ditch and struck an embankment. Clugston’s 1995 Volvo station wagon was totaled in the accident.
Kane wrote that Clugston had possible face and head injuries, and Kane brought the student to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The bulk of motor vehicle accidents in Castine in recent months have involved MMA students, and a local alcohol enforcement team has doubled down on patrols in the area around the campus.
MMA has disciplinary programs to curb underage drinking and to punish students who commit crimes while under the influence, including an Honor Board that can mete out punishments up to expulsion.
