Local tagging stations are reporting mixed results from this year’s deer hunt.

While overall figures won’t be available until spring, at least two local tagging stations report a decrease so far.

The general deer-hunting season ended Nov. 24. The season for archery and muzzle loading ends Saturday, Dec. 8.

At Bowdoinham Country Store, owner David Skelton reported 79 deer tagged as of Wednesday. Last year, the store tagged 136 deer through Dec. 8.

“It looks like it might be down, but there’s a station this year in Richmond,” Skelton said.

“About 80 percent of the deer I’ve seen come in here have been bucks,” Skelton said. “A lot of folks are saying they’re seeing does out there, but they don’t have doe permits.”

Roland Bisson, owner of Bisson’s Center Store in Phippsburg, reported what could turn out to be a significant increase in taggings. Bisson’s has done 124 so far, compared to 107 last year.

“We’ve had some nice bucks come in this year,” Bisson said. “I think it’s going pretty good for hunters around here. I saw a nice 206- pound, 9-point buck.”

Kenney’s, on Middle Road in Woolwich, is no longer operating as a store, but is still tagging deer.

As of Wednesday, Kenney’s had taken in 21 deer.

“It’s nothing like it was in the past,” Kenney said. “My son, Howie, says there’s no hunters out — nobody along the power lines, or on Route 128.”
