Trinity celebrates 130th

Trinity Lutheran Church, 612 Main St., Westbrook, is celebrating its 130th anniversary on Sunday, Nov. 18, with music and memories at the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

In the fellowship hall there will be refreshments and a display of the many ministries of the church.

Trinity was founded in 1882 as The First Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church. Until 1905, all services were conducted in the Danish Language, when a monthly service conducted in English began. By 1942, all services were in English and the congregation became more diversified.

In 1946, the name of the church was changed to Trinity Lutheran. The building has undergone many changes and additions. In this 130th year, the congregation is dedicating a new bell tower and new front steps. While there are still members of the church of Danish heritage, the congregation has members from many different cultures and nationalities, including several individuals and families from Ethiopia/Eritrea.

Trinity Lutheran worships every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The Ethiopian/Eritrean fellowship also has a service of prayer and singing in their native language on Saturdays at 3 p.m.

On the fourth Sunday of every month at 4 p.m., there is Rejoicing Spirits worship for anyone in the community with intellectual, developmental or other disabilities. A fellowship meal follows.

The congregation of Trinity is also involved in many social ministry activities including sponsoring a weekly free, community meal at the teen center.

‘Applause’ scholarship benefit

The annual benefit, “Applause for a Cause,” in memory of cancer victim Ann Mason Osann, will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, in the Westbrook Performing Arts Center, 471 Stroudwater St., Westbrook.

Groups participating include chamber singers from both Westbrook and Gorham high schools along with the choir from First Parish Congregational Church in Gorham.

The event includes a silent auction, raffles, bake sale, and sing along. Admission is free.

Osann was a music instructor for the Westbrook school system and she raised money for cancer research.

Woman’s club ?to meet

Westbrook Woman’s Club will meet at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St. Betty Sawtelle, a local author, will speak.

Those attending are reminded to take along a book or two for a book swap. Guests are welcome and light refreshments will be served.

Benefit for ?Hospice worker

For a friend afflicted with cancer, a Westbrook woman is organizing a benefit from 1-7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, at The Roost, 62 Chicopee Road, in Buxton.

Darleen Hawkes Doughty of Westbrook said Jane Howard, 58, of Standish, her friend and co-worker at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, was diagnosed with cancer in June.

Doughty also said that Howard’s husband was hospitalized eight days in the Cardiac Care Unit at Maine Medical Center in October.

The benefit music includes rock’n’ roll, country folk, bluegrass, rockabilly and jam sessions. Everyone is asked to take a dish for the potluck table. The event features, raffles. 50/50 and a cash bar. Dress is tropical.

Seniors Thanksgiving meal

Westbrook Senior Citizens will be served a Thanksgiving dinner at noon on Monday, Nov. 19, in the Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

The meal includes roast turkey with gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, squash, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Guitarist and singer Brad Harnois and a friend will entertain.

The seniors will travel to Indian Head in Lincoln, N.H., on Sunday, Dec. 9. The group is planning to attend a dinner and show in Biddeford in February and another trip in March to Venus Di Milo in Massachusetts for a show.
