Two new town councilors took their seats Tuesday while a pair of longtime board members departed to praise from a small gallery of family and friends.

Charlotte Bishop, with 13 years, and Jim Cassida, 10 years on the council, gaveled the meeting to order and stood by for the Pledge of Allegiance. They then stepped aside so newcomers Andrew Wellen and Melanie Sachs, elected to the board Nov. 6, could be sworn in.

The remainder of the official meeting was brief: At- Large Councilor Jim Hendricks was elected chairman; District 3 Councilor Kristina Egan was elected vice chairman.

An additional meeting was scheduled for Nov. 27 to discuss draft policies, permitting issues for the Hunter and Pownal road athletic fields complex, and “a list of business items that need to be addressed,” according to Town Manager Peter Joseph.

The council also scheduled its regular Dec. 4 meeting to be held at Merriconeag Waldorf School on Desert Road.

An appreciation ceremony for Bishop and Cassida followed the meeting, with Councilor Rich DeGrandpre serving as master of ceremonies.

DeGrandpre and Bishop attended town schools together as youths; Bishop had classes in the 30 Main St. building that later was renovated into the Town Office.
