Topsham police are investigating a fire Monday at an old playground at the former Navy Annex.
The fire on Liberty Circle initially was reported at 2:28 p.m. as a brush fire, Fire Chief Brian Stockdale said. Playground equipment consisting of a cork, plastic and wood was burning, and a bench seat had been broken apart to start the fire, Stockdale said Tuesday.
Topsham police are investigating and according to Lt. Fred Dunn, have a couple juvenile suspects. A bicycle was found in the area of the playground, which was in disrepair, Stockdale said.
Firefighters had the fire knocked down in five to 10 minutes, Stockdale said. The area is gated and locked, and a employee of the company managing the housing was on scene quickly to unlock the gate, he said.
Topsham firefighters also were called to a structure fire Friday that remains under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office. Firefighters responded to a mobile home on fire at 222 Ward Road at 3:19 p.m. Brunswick Fire Department responded with a tanker, Stockdale said. The fire was under control within 15 minutes.
A couch in the mobile home was on fire, Stockdale said. The home was vacant at the time and no one was there when firefighters arrived. The fire marshal’s office was called to investigate after which the scene was cleared at 6:55 p.m. Power to the mobile home was on, Stockdale said.
