SOMERVILLE
Regional School Unit 12 towns passed a new cost-sharing formula by a margin of nearly 2-to-1 on Tuesday.
The vote for the new cost – allocation, which will take effect in the next fiscal year, was 4,481 to 2,710. Only Somerville voted against it.
The revised formula will provide substantial cost reductions for Wiscasset and Westport Island — towns that are considering withdrawal from the district. Alna will receive a smaller tax break, while some towns in the northern half of the school unit will sustain cost increases.
Tuesday’s official vote tally, by town:
— Alna, 328-117
— Chelsea, 701-516
— Palermo, 388-325
— Somerville, 105-133
— Westport Island, 379-79
— Whitefield, 652-481
— Windsor, 579-526
— Wiscasset, 1,349-533
