BRUNSWICK
The League of American Bicyclists has reaffirmed Brunswick’s status as a “bronze”-level town on the group’s list of “bicycle-friendly” communities.
It’s also the only town in Maine to receive the designation.
“This is not an award where you send them $25 and they send you a wooden plaque,” said Rich Cromwell, president of the Topshambased Merrymeeting Wheelers Bicycle Club.
“This is an award that shouldn’t be taken lightly,” he said. “Only 242 municipalities around the country, in 47 states, are designated as bikefriendly.”
Cromwell and nine club members presented a plaque and street sign to town councilors and town planner Anna Breinich on Monday.
Work continues to make the town even more conducive to two-wheeled and pedestrian travel. One example is a federal grant, matched by muncipal funds, to establish or improve “safe routes” to school.
“These are really amazing things to happen in a small town like this,” Cromwell said.
Top towns on the League list include Boulder, Colo., and Davis, Calif., at the “platinum” level; and Seattle and Minneapolis at “gold.”
No East Coast community ranked higher than “silver.” But among those to reach that level are Boston, New York City, Arlington, Va., and Carrboro, N.C.
