DURHAM
A local man was airlifted to Central Maine Medical Center Wednesday after flipping his car off Route 9.
Alan Kelley, 40, of Durham was traveling east on Route 9, also known as Newell Brook Road, about 3 p.m. when he lost control of his 1999 Mercury Sable on a curve. The car bounced off curbing, swerved across the road, rolled over a shallow embankment and came to rest at the base of a utility pole.
“He was going way too fast,” said Sgt. Brian Smith of Androscoggin County Sheriff
’s Office.
Smith said Kelley was talking to rescue personnel when they arrived but “complained of extreme back pain.”
A LifeFlight helicopter landed in an adjacent field and carried Kelley to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was treated and released later that night.
Charges in the case are pending; Smith did not specify what they would be.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
