LISBON
The Town Council will hold a public hearing on a proposed fireworks ordinance and may formally adopt the rules tonight.
The town has no fireworks ordinance in place and so currently follows state regulations.
Councilors will do a second reading tonight of a draft municipal ordinance that seeks to clearly define the sale and use of fireworks in town.
It defines consumer fireworks and restricts fireworks discharge or ignition to 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. on July 4, during Moxie Days, and on New Year’s Eve.
The rules would ban fireworks on all public property, on high fire danger days as designated by the fire warden, or within 100 feet of buildings.
An exception would be granted to someone who has been issued a permit by the town or state.
The ordinance sets civil penalties for violations ranging from $110 for a first citation to $850 for fourth and subsequent citations.
After the public hearing, councilors may vote on the ordinance’s final reading.
The council is also scheduled to hear reports from the finance director, town manager and recreation department.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the town office.
