PORTLAND (AP) — Independent Senate candidate Angus King continues to maintain a comfortable lead over Republican Charlie Summers in Maine’s race for an open U.S. Senate seat, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The survey by Pan Atlantic SMS Group indicated 50 percent of likely voters surveyed would vote for King or were leaning toward voting for him, while Summers drew 24 percent and Democrat Cynthia Dill 12 percent. About 14 percent were undecided.

The numbers were similar to a Critical Insights poll last month. That poll, commissioned by the Maine Sunday Telegram, showed King with 50 percent to Summers’ 28 percent and Dill’s 12 percent.

Neither survey asked respondents about three lesser known candidates for Senate, Andrew Ian Dodge, Steve Woods or Danny Dalton. The Pan Atlantic poll said fewer than 1 percent of respondents chose the “other” category.

In the presidential race, 51 percent said they’d vote for Barack Obama, while 37 percent supported Mitt Romney, according to the poll. Ten percent were undecided.

Fifty-seven percent of those polled said they support same-sex marriage, while 39 percent opposed it. About 4.5 percent of respondents were undecided.

Pan Atlantic’s phone poll was conducted Sept. 24-28.
