Atlantic coastal states from Maine through North Carolina have scheduled hearings to gather public comment on an amendment to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic menhaden.
The Maine Department of Marine Resources hearing is 5 p.m., Oct. 17 in the Casco Bay Lines conference room, 56 Commercial St., Portland.
The amendment presents options to manage and monitor the fish stock in the short and long term. These include options to end overfishing; change the biomass reference points to match the fishing mortality reference points; and establish a specification process to set and allocate total allowable catch, according to a news release.
Public comment will be accepted until 5 p.m. Nov. 16 and should be sent to Mike Waine, Fishery Management Plan Coordinator, at 1050 N. Highland St., Suite 200 A-N, Arlington, VA 22201; faxed to (703) 842-0741; or emailed to or mwaine@asmfc.org with a subject line: “Draft Amendment 2”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
