WINTHROP

Lisbon High School made a resounding statement to the rest of the Campbell Conference Friday night.

After beginning the season with a pair of football losses, the Greyhounds ran all over the Winthrop Ramblers. They compiled 445 yards, all on the ground, in a 48-0 whitewashing.

The Greyhounds (1-2) scored on their third play from scrimmage and kept on scoring. They put up 42 points before the half and ripped off 330 yards on just 21 carries. For the game they averaged 14.8 yards per pop.

This was definitely not the same team that began the season with a pair of losses. This was a dominating squad with toughness up front and speed coming from an array of weapons.

“We all executed,” said junior tailback Quincy Thompson, who carried the ball just four times, but picked up 88 yards and three scores of 23 or more yards. “Brandon Hovey, Joe Philbrick and Kyle Sheehan blocked great. We just followed our blocks.”

The Greyhounds had their way all night long. They attacked the Rambler flanks, with tight end Hovey, fullback Sheehan and Philbrick leading the way. The Ramblers (1- 2) had no answer.

Thompson got the points rolling after a seal block took care of the Rambler defensive end. Thompson’s speed did the rest as he raced his way around the left side for a 30- yard score.

On their second series, the Greyhounds continued to attack the edge of the Ramblers’ defense. A 30-yard sweep around the right side by Mason Haley (five carries for 72 yards) moved the ball near midfield. Junior Jordan Torres (four rushes for 106 yards) followed Hovey, Philbrick and Sheehan for a 21-yard burst around the left side. Two plays later, Thompson went 23 yards off tackle to paydirt.

“Joe, Kyle and Brandon blocked like I haven’t seen at Lisbon,” said Lisbon coach Dick Mynahan, who’s certainly seen his share of solid blocking in his tenure at the Greyhound helm. “They did an excellent job.”

Lisbon hadn’t played with their full compliment the first two weeks. With a host of players making their 2012 debut, they suddenly looked the part of a conference heavyweight.

“We had a little depth out there,” said Mynahan. “The past two weeks, we played with about 13 guys. We got worn down. We got some guys back and those guys were hungry.”

The Ramblers’ best offense in the first half came from the power running game, with senior running back Danny Moody opening Winthrop’s first series with 11 straight runs for 47 yards. Moody’s initial output accounted for over half of the team’s 91 yards on the ground. He carried the ball two more times before he was knocked out of the game after catching a short pass along the Lisbon sideline.

Lisbon went for the kill late in the first quarter when Jordan Glover penetrated through the middle of the line to block Mario Meucci’s punt deep in Winthrop’s own end. Two plays later, Torres went over from the six to put the visitors up 21-0.

The onslaught continued into the second quarter. The Greyhounds scored on their first two offensive plays, first with Thompson racing around the corner for a 37- yard score. A few minutes later, it was Torres’ turn as he broke an off-tackle run for a 65-yard touchdown jaunt to give the Greyhounds a 35-0 lead.

“They were more physical than us,” said Winthrop coach Joel Stoneton. “They wanted it more and they put it to us.”

Lisbon didn’t attempt a pass the entire game. They tacked on a score late in the first half by sophomore C.J. Adams. In the fourth quarter, younger brother Henry Adams raced 62 yards for the final points.
