ABBEY MACDONALD, Alex Sciacca, Joe Armstrong and Kyle Heatley of Shotokan Karate Academy in Topsham recently earned their first degree black belt from the Shotokan Karate International Federation, a world-wide organization with branches in over 100 countries. Abbey MacDonald, 18, began her karate journey at the academy in 2005. She will continue practicing Shotokan in the fall as she heads to University of Maine at Orono to study management and marketing. Alex Sciacca, a 16-year-old Brunswick High School senior, began training at the academy in 2006. Joseph Armstrong, 14, has trained at the academy since he was 7. The Merriconeag Waldorf School student will enter grade 9 in the fall. Kyle Heatley, 13, also began as a 7-year-old. He is entering grade 8 at Brunswick Junior High School.
