BREWER (AP) — A new accountable care approach to health care is being announced in Brewer.
Penobscot Community Health Care is joining Eastern Maine Health System’s accountable care organization, for patients who are covered by Medicare. PCHC was selected by EMHS to be the first organization to join this new effort, and is said to be the first community health center in Maine to actively embrace the accountable care effort.
An announcement is being made today.
Accountable care is a new approach in today’s challenging health care environment.
For years, health care providers were paid for units of health care services and procedures delivered. Through this new model, providers will be reimbursed for the quality of care provided, for clearly improving outcomes for patients, and for reducing overall cost of health care.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
