THE CATHANCE RIVER EDUCATION ALLIANCE (CREA), Best Buy and the Topsham Public Library teamed up for an electronics recycling effort on June 30. Volunteers, shown here, helped stuff the Best Buy truck as more than 100 motorists dropped off their electronics. The effort collected more than 75 televisions, 50 computer monitors and towers, several cellphones, laptop computers, vacuums, and small electrical appliances for recycling. “The Cathance River Education Alliance is proud to help our communities reduce, reuse and recycle,” a release from the organization states. “It is important to note that Best Buy recycles electronics every day at their Topsham store. Customers can bring up to three items whenever they wish. The National Safety Council projects that nearly 250 million computers will become obsolete in the next five years and mobile phones are discarded at a rate of 130 million per year.” CREA and Best Buy plan to conduct a similar collection event in the fall.
