PORTLAND — The YES! fifth-grade girls basketball team won the 2012 AAU Division 2 Classic National Championship recently in Franklin, Tenn.

This is the first time the YES! fifth-grade girls have been to a national tournament. The squad compiled a two-year undefeated record of 60-0 in Maine.

Brunswick’s Catherine Reid is a team member.

Yes! was one of 63 teams from across the country with a chance to win the tournament. The teams, through pool play, were moved into four different divisions, with each having their own champion. The YES! team won the AAU Division II Classic Championship.

Yes! eliminated teams from Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and Indiana.

“The level of fifth-grade play was nothing the girls had ever seen before,” said team representative Steve Leen of Yarmouth. “However, the YES! team played strong and stuck to what coach Dudley Davis had spent countless hours teaching them — play as a team, play strong defense and don’t be intimated. Do what you do best — have fun and play basketball.”
