To the editor:
I agree with Sarah Weippert’s June letter, (“No place for young adults”).
While I am older than Sarah, I also find Bath at times to be difficult. My wife and I are both busy working parents, and although Bath has many charming aspects, neither the businesses nor the school district make it an easy place for us to live.
The stores are not open after work, and our son has sports and other school activities on Saturday so it’s hard to shop downtown when things are open.
The school district is seriously underfunded and too many Bath residents seem to care more about a small increase in taxes than they do about attracting families with a vibrant school system.
As for the Black Barnacle, we walk downtown often at night — too bad all the stores are closed — and we’ve never seen or heard anything coming from that pub that would be a problem.
There are cigarette butts all over downtown, so if that’s the big complaint, it is misdirected. Would it be better to have a closed and empty store front?

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
