ORONO — Joe Messerman of Brunswick accomplished a rare feat while qualifying for this week’s Maine Amateur Championship, which begins on Tuesday at Sunday River Golf .
Messerman holed out a 195- yard shot with a five-iron to score a double-eagle (albatross) on the par-5, seventh hole to highlight a round of 78.
Needing a big finish, Messerman qualified for the Maine Amateur by chipping in on the 18th hole as well to punch his ticket to Sunday River in Newry.
