To the editor:
We write in support of the Black Barnacle Pub in Bath that has been denied a liquor license renewal by the Bath City Council.
Don’t let the exterior decor deceive you. We eat at the pub about once a month and we have gone to listen to the excellent live music. We have never witnessed one problem.
The staff is very nice and professional, the sandwiches are great — they do have a full menu — and we have seen many of Bath’s upstanding citizens patronizing it as well.
We have been there in both the early and late evening and the adjacent stores have been closed, so I can’t imagine how it is significantly affecting their businesses.
We have seen smokers outside other local drinking establishments just as often as we have outside the Barnacle, and it is not even every time we go.
Since there have been no more police calls than a nearby bar, it seems that the Bath City Council needs to investigate this further and maybe rethink their decision. Enough businesses have failed in Bath for financial reasons, lets not force one out that is doing well.
Thank you.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
