BRUNSWICK
A driver attempting to stop and help another motorist on the side of Route 1 triggered a three-vehicle crash Saturday morning on Route 1, according to police.
Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said the crash was reported at 8:38 a.m.
Patricia Carpenter, 74, of 125 Congress Ave., Bath, driving a 1999 Toyota car west in the right lane of Route 1, reportedly slowed to assist a motorist stopped on the shoulder, Hagan said.
Behind Carpenter, a 2001 Chevrolet car driven by Cheryl Manyak, 48, of P.O. Box 43, Harpswell, swerved suddenly from the right lane into the left lane to avoid hitting Carpenter. A third vehicle, a 2004 Buick car driven by a 16-year-old female from Westbrook, was in the left lane. When Carpenter pulled in front of it, the Buick struck the car driven by Manyak, sending Manyak into the car driven by Carpenter. Manyak had a 20-year-old male passenger.
Carpenter complained of pain, but Hagan said no one required hospitalization. No charges were filed. The motorist parked on the shoulder was not involved in the crash.
