A butterfly alights on a dandelion in Topsham. The Massachusetts Butterfly Club identifies the species as a Red Admiral or Vanessa Atalanta butterfly. Maine is home to at least 120 species of butterfly, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The department will conduct its sixth annual Maine Butterfly Survey — a statewide, volunteer survey effort designed to fill information gaps on butterfly distribution, flight seasons, and habitat relationships for one of the state's most popular insects — later this year. To help new volunteers join the survey, the department plans to sponsor a six-hour training workshop on a Saturday to be determined in June at Colby College in Waterville. Participants will learn about butterfly biology, identification and details on MBS survey protocols. Lunch will be provided and participants will be given a butterfly net, collecting equipment, and training manual.
