BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College women’s lacrosse team used an 8- 0 run to open the second half to pull away from the University of New England in a 21-7 win on Sunday afternoon.

The 12th-ranked Polar Bears improved to 9-5, while the Nor’easters fell to 12-4 overall.

Bowdoin got four goals apiece from Carolyn Gorajek and Elizabeth Clegg, while Katie Herter and Celeste Swain each had three tallies.

Gina Newsome and Nikki Smith both had two goals in the loss for UNE, which has Brunswick defender Olivia Robbins on its roster.

The Polar Bears opened up an early 5-1 lead, but the Nor’easters were able to stay within striking distance at halftime, trailing 10-5 at the break.

Tara Connolly stopped five shots and allowed six goals for Bowdoin before giving way to Isabel Sippel, who made four stops and permitted one goal over the final 13 minutes.

Clegg had a team-high four groundballs for Bowdoin, while Katie Stewart and Olivia King both caused three turnovers. Katie Herter picked up three draw controls.

Bowdoin will return to action on Wednesday evening when it closes out its NESCAC regular season against Tufts at 7 p.m. at Ryan Field.

Softball

Bowdoin powered its way to a doubleheader sweep of Colby on a recordsetting Saturday afternoon at Pickard Field, 7-1 and 8-0.

Melissa DellaTorre (14-5) earned her 14th victory of the season in game one, establishing a single-season record for wins by a Polar Bear. Caroline Dewar had four hits in the doubleheader to tie Bowdoin’s career hits record with 158, while Gen Barlow also blasted two home runs in the win to tie the school’s single-season record with seven.

DellaTorre broke the record formerly shared by Karen Reni and Julia Jacobs. Dewar and Barlow both tied the marks held by Kristie Miller.

The Polar Bears have rolled to five consecutive wins and six straight conference victories, improving to 25-10 (6-3 NESCAC). The Mules fell to 8-19 (0- 9 NESCAC) with the setback.

Bowdoin hit three home runs in the opener, with Barlow’s second homer of the game giving Bowdoin a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Toni DaCampo immediately followed with a solo shot to dead center that gave the Polar Bears a 3-1 edge. Bowdoin added four more runs in the fifth with the big blow coming from a Dewar triple.

Bowdoin blew open game two with an eight-run outburst to earn a shortened walk-off win in the nightcap. Scoreless entering the fifth, the Polar Bears pounded out seven hits, getting a two-run single from Hillary Smyth and a two-run single from Barlow to spark the rally.

Tricia Thibodeau allowed three hits over five innings to earn the victory.

On Friday at Waterville, DellaTorre pitched a complete game and Hackett drove in a pair of runs as the Polar Bears rolled to a 5-0 victory over Colby at Crafts Field.

Baseball

On Sunday, Bowdoin and Roger Williams split a non-conference doubleheader at Pickard Field.

Roger Williams won the opener in eight innings, 6-4, before Bowdoin bounced back to take game two, 4-2.

The Polar Bears stand at 18-13, while the Hawks are 11-25.

Down 4-3 in the seventh inning of the opener, Trevor Manzi got the Hawks going with a one-out single and pinchrunner Tom Dwyer moved to third on Chris Travers’ single to right. Dwyer scampered home with the tying run on a passed ball to send the game into extra innings. In the top of the seventh, Mike Pascarella tripled home Tim Georgen with the go-ahead run and Roger Williams got a key insurance run with Pascarella came home on a sac fly by Derek Jerome.

Pascarella had three hits in the opener for the Hawks, including a pair of runs scored. Buddy Shea had a two-run single in the loss for Bowdoin. Drew LoRusso took the loss for Bowdoin in relief, permitting two earned runs in 2.1 frames.

The Polar Bears rebounded behind a complete game from pitcher Sam Herzig. He allowed one earned run and six hits over seven innings with four strikeouts.

Bowdoin loaded the bases and scored twice on errors in the second inning, and added to its lead on a squeeze play in the fourth.

On Saturday, Bowdoin and Colby split a doubleheader at Pickard Field. The Polar Bears claimed game one, 6-5, before the Mules took game two, 7-5.

The series began on Friday at Waterville, with Bowdoin taking advantage of four walks, a hit batter and a costly error to score four runs in the fifth inning for a 6-1 victory.

Bowdoin’s Oliver Van Zant pitched a complete game two-hitter, striking out 11 and walking one.

Men’s tennis

Bowdoin extended its winning streak to seven matches with a convincing 7-2 win over Bates on Friday afternoon at the Pickard Tennis Courts.

The winning streak is the longest for the team since the 2009 season and improved the ninth-ranked Polar Bears to 9-5 (5-1 NESCAC). Fifteenthranked Bates dropped to 6-6 (1-3 NESCAC).

Bowdoin again dominated doubles play, and has a 21-0 record in doubles matches on its current seven-match surge.

The duos of Sam King/Oscar Pena (8-5), Kyle Wolstencroft/Doug Caplan (8-4) and Casey Grindon/Chris Lord (8-3) gave the hosts a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles action.

Pena took a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, and was supported by straight-set wins from Grindon at No. 4 (6-0, 6-2), Noah Bragg at No. 5 (6-4, 6-3) and Wolstencroft at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0) to clinch the win.

Men’s track

Bowdoin College placed second at the men’s Maine State Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday at Colby College.

The Polar Bears totaled 222 points, trailing only state champion Bates (235). Southern Maine (82.50) and Colby (74.50) placed second and third, respectively.

Chris Martin continued his recent string of strong performances by winning both the long jump (21-00.50) and triple jump (45-07) on Saturday. Sam Chick claimed the 400-meter hurdles (54.49) in a state championship meet record time, besting the record of Bowdoin’s Greydon Foil (54.62).

Bowdoin went 1-2 in the 1,500 with Matthew Hillard winning (3:58.35), just .31 seconds ahead of Coby Horowitz. Samuel Seekins won the 5,000 (14:56.59), while Gregory Talpey took the 10,000 (32:55.52). James Boeding placed first for the Polar Bears in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:26.09).

The Polar Bears also claimed the statecrowninthe4x100relay(43.41), courtesy of team members Rickey Larke, Matthew Gamache, Lonnie Hackett and Jarred Kennedy-Loving.

Women’s track

Bowdoin won the 2012 Aloha Relays this weekend at Magee-Samuelson Track.

The Polar Bears scored 196 points to defeat Southern Maine (131), Colby (122), Bates (82.50), Smith (63.50), Mount Holyoke (20) and Husson (9).

Elsa Millett won the 200-meter (25.40) and 400 competitions (57.41) for the Polar Bears. Other winners included Madelena Rizzo in the 5,000 (18:51.29), Molly Porcher in the 10,000 (42:19.99), Emily Clark in the 400 hurdles (1:05.45) and Anna Ackerman in the 3,000 steeplechase (11:18.00).

Bowdoin claimed a pair of relay winsinthe4x400(Clark,Samantha Copland, Alee Wade and Millett in 4:09.87)andthe4x100(LauraPeterson, Clark, Millett and Copland in 49.47).

Annie Huyler won six of the seven events and scored 4,116 points to easily win the heptathlon competition.

In the field events, Peterson won both the long jump (17-07.50) and triple jump (36-03.50) for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin also earned wins courtesy of Erin Silva in the pole vault (11-05.75), Randi London in the shot put (38- 07.75), and Katherine Harmon in the hammer throw (157-08).

Men’s lacrosse

Bowdoin rolled to its fourth consecutive win, 8-4 over Endicott on Sunday afternoon.

The 16th-ranked Polar Bears Polar Bears (11-3) finished their non-conference slate with a perfect 5-0 mark and reached the 11-win plateau for the first time since the 2008 campaign.

Bowdoin will look to earn a home quarterfinal game for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament at fifth-ranked Tufts in its regular season finale on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Bowdoin attacker Nathan Fritts scored a hat trick and assisted on another goal for four total points to lead all players. Fellow attacker Patrick Lawlor added two more goals, while senior goalie Christopher Williamson made 11 saves between the pipes.
