Walk for ?Habitat for Humanity

On Saturday, April 21, a five-mile walk for Habitat for Humanity will be held. Sign up at Windham Hill Church from 8:30 to 9 a.m. You can register in advance online by creating your own personalized webpage at www.firstgiving.com/habitatme. It’s easy, fast and fun. You can even upload photos or link it with your Facebook page. Then you simply forward your page link to family and friends; anyone you think may be interested in supporting your efforts to help Habitat. The Windham Parks and Recreation Department will be celebrating Earth Day at the Lowell Preserve on Sunday, April 22. Starting at 1 p.m., families can participate in an Earth Day treasure hunt that will take about 30 minutes. Parks and Recreation Director Brian Ross says, “We hope to increase the awareness of the Lowell Preserve as a great place for families to enjoy the outdoors in Windham.” Register by calling the Windham Parks and Recreation Department at 892-1905 by April 19.

Speakout, April 26

On Thursday, April 26, Bill Diamond will host Speakout on Windham’s local Channel 7 at 7 p.m.

This month’s topic will be a one-on-one discussion with town councilor David Nadeau. The second half of the show will be covering other legislative matters.

Veterans’ benefits

Veterans Service Officer Phyllis D’Orsay will be at the Windham Veterans Center on Wednesday morning, April 25, 9 a.m. until noon, to assist veterans, widows of veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. To access the Windham Veterans Center, enter Veterans Memorial Drive off Route 302 between Evergreen Credit Union and Friendly’s and follow to the end. No appointment is needed.

Drug take back

On Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Windham Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Windham Public Safety Building at 375 Gray Road. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Gunpowder mill program

A gunpowder mill in Windham’s “Gambo” area produced a fourth of all gunpowder used during the Civil War by the Union troops. On Saturday, April 21, a Power Point program on the Gambo Gunpowder Mill will be presented at Windham Historical Society, 234 Windham Center Road. The program begins at 9 a.m. and will be followed by refreshments and a brief business meeting. Those who wish may also participate in a guided tour of the gunpowder mill site, at 1:30 p.m. Co-hosts will be Don Wescott, Presumpscot Regional Land Trust (which owns the site) and David Tanguay, Vice President of Windham Historical Society. There is no charge for this public program; donations are gratefully received to further the educational work of the Society. Tea and quilts

The public is invited to tea at the Windham Historical Society on Wednesday, April 25, from 1-3 p.m. Jean Wright, of Windham, will speak on “Stories Behind Grandmother’s Quilts.” The Society is in the brick building adjacent to the school office on Windham Center Road.

Church supper

Windham Hill UCC is holding its popular roast beef supper on Saturday, April 28, from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu includes roast beef, mashed potato with gravy, green beans and more. $8 for adults, $5 for children under 12.

A Hunter Safety Course will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, May 5 and 12 at Windham Public Library. Fee is $5 per person, ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult and registrants must attend both days. Pre-registration is required. Call the town clerk at 892-1900.

Church Fair

A spring fair will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, Route 302 in North Windham on Saturday, May 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Baked goods, crafts, white elephant table and more, including lunch. Tables are available by calling Mary at 627-7007 or Marcia, 892-3769.

Windham man to Air Force Academy

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree has announced that Devin Pelletier of Windham has been accepted and will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Pelletier is a senior at Windham High School and is the son of Kurt and Aileen Pelletier.

Thrift shop

At North Windham Union Church Thrift Shop, in the basement of the church on Route 302, near the corner of Route 115 is open from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday or 10 a.m. until noon Saturdays. Check out the bargains!

Free clothes

Windham’s Free Clothes Closet is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. A great selection of clothing for all ages including adults is available including hats, jackets and coats, shoes and women’s handbags; other items include books for all ages, some games and linens. The Clothes Closet is accepting gently used spring and summer clothing for children of all ages, as well as for adults. Due to lack of storage, winter clothing cannot be accepted at this time. Benefits for seniors

A one-on-one counseling session with Owen O’Donnell, a volunteer Benefit Specialist is available from 10 a.m. to 4 p. m. on Tuesdays at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Find out about tax and rent rebate, Medicare, food stamps, fuel assistance and other benefits you may qualify for. Call Southern Maine Agency on Aging, 1-800-427-7411 to make an appointment.

Programs ?to save energy

Windham-Raymond Adult Education is offering two workshops on Alternative Energy in the Lakes Region – solar on April 26 and geothermal on May 3. Vets Center schedule

Don Swander has provided a schedule of activities for the Windham Veterans Center. Located on Veterans Memorial Drive, in back of Big Lots in North Windham, the 40-by-50-foot hall is available for rent for public functions. It has a capacity of 200; a full kitchen with commercial gas range, round and rectangle tables and folding chairs. Call 310-4891 for more information.
