AUGUSTA (AP) — Mainers have watched as the early blast of summer weather last week hastened ice- out on lakes.

Now, park rangers on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway are reporting deteriorating ice and snow conditions on the headwater lakes of the northern Maine river and nearby trails.

Rangers have stopped traveling on the ice in those areas because of the unsafe conditions due to the warming weather. They report at least one fish house through the ice and are advising fishermen to stay home until open water fishing starts on April 1.

Allagash waterway Superintendent Matt LaRoche says warm temperatures last week melted most of the snow pack, causing the lakes to rise and the ice to break away from lake shores. Some of the dams have been opened due to heavy runoff.
