WATERVILLE (AP) — The grandfather of a toddler who went missing two months ago in Maine is challenging the girl’s father to explain what happened to the youngster.
Ron Reynolds said Thursday he wants to know why Justin DiPietro didn’t protect Ayla Reynolds, who was 20 months old when she was reported missing on Dec. 17.
Ayla’s blood was found in the basement of DiPietro’s Waterville home and police say DiPietro, his girlfriend and his sister aren’t telling all that they know.
DiPietro said he last saw Ayla when he put her to bed. He couldn’t be reached Thursday.
State police spokesman Steve McCausland said investigators continue to work around the clock. He said investigators have received more than 900 tips from the public.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
