BRUNSWICK — Visiting Bangor held off a Brunswick rally as the Rams came away with a 45-42 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference girls high school basketball victory on Tuesday.

“ We got it down to two points (44-42), and we had the ball with eight seconds left with a chance to tie it, but the shot didn’t go,” said Brunswick coach Sam Farrell, whose team dropped to 2- 4 and plays host to Lewiston on Friday at 7 p.m.

Bangor (3-3) led 12-8 after a quarter, 28-16 at the half and 38- 25 through 24 minutes. Brunswick outscored the Rams 17-7 in the fourth quarter, but dropped its second straight.

Becky Champagne paced Brunswick with eight points, while Julia Champagne had six points and a like number of assists. Lauren Carlton added six points, Liz Faulkner six points, six rebounds and five steals, Libby Arford a team-leading seven caroms and Mel Bryant three blocked shots. The Dragons were three of six from the foul line.

Katie Brochu led all scorers with 12 points for Bangor, with teammate Denae Johnson chipping in eight. The Rams finished three of 13 from the line.

The host Rams held Brunswick without a field goal in the fourth quarter en route to a KVAC win.

“They’re good, big and disciplined, and we just couldn’t match their toughness on defense,” said Brunswick (4-2) coach Todd Hanson, whose team has a key contest on Friday at 4-1 Lewiston (7 p.m.).

Bangor posted quarter leads of 13-7, 25-14 and 38-31.

“We cut it to six points late in the third, but we didn’t get anything going in the fourth quarter,” said Hanson.

Robby Brookings led Bangor with 18 points, with Patrick Stewart chipping in 13. The Rams were three of 13 from the charity stripe.

Mitch Black paced Brunswick with 11 points, while Trent Anderson added seven. The Dragons finished 12 of 22 from the line. Black had four steals.
