TOPSHAM
The Topsham Police Department received a holiday enforcement grant that will allow extra patrols through the first week of January.
Lt. Christopher Lewis said the department received the $5,000 grant from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, which reimburses the department for overtime costs for additional officers on the road focusing on apprehending intoxicated motorists.
The enforcement details began Nov. 23. As of Tuesday, Lewis said three of the town’s most recent operating under the influence arrests were made during the OUI details.
Lewis said the department has participated in every OUI grant program that has been offered since 2007.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
