WINDHAM – Friends of Joe Green, the Windham man accused of murdering an intruder who was allegedly in the process of stealing marijuana from Green’s Route 302 property, are using the social networking site Facebook to raise money for his bail.

The effort, led by Melissa Bailey, a Windham resident whose husband Kevin became friends with Green at Windham High School, has raised $13,000 so far. Bail is set at $25,000.

“We’re halfway there,” Bailey said earlier this week.

Bailey regularly updates the Facebook page, “Let Joe Green Go,” which has 142 “friends.” The page is meant to publicize a Key Bank account in Windham where supporters can donate money toward Green’s bail.

Bailey is supportive of Green, whom police say was growing marijuana inside and outside his Roosevelt Trail home, because she believes he acted in defense of his property.

“You can’t come on to someone’s property and take something that’s not yours. It doesn’t matter what it is,” Bailey said.

Cumberland County Superior Court Justice Roland Cole denied a bail reduction request by Green’s lawyer in early January. At the hearing Cole argued that Green’s bail was commensurate with the crime he is accused of. Green is accused of manslaughter in the shooting death of David Harmon, 40, also of Windham, in September.

According to state police investigators, Harmon was trying to make off with an undisclosed amount of marijuana growing on Green’s property when Green caught Harmon in the act and shot him as he fled. The incident was originally publicized as a hunter’s death. Green is also accused of moving Harmon’s body to a spot below a rocky outcropping behind his home, which is near the intersection of Land of Nod Road.

Bailey said not all the facts of the case have been made known and she looks forward to the trial where “we’re hoping for the best,” she said earlier this week.
