A Bridgton school board member will resign after four years in the position in order to avoid a potential conflict of interest if he should apply for a position with School Administrative District 61.

After working as a chiropractor for 20 years, Estabrook Sulloway, 52, will attend the Extended Teacher Education Program at the University of Southern Maine to be certified to teach middle and high school physical science, life science and Spanish.

“I am interested in having involvement with the youth of the community,” said Sulloway, who has taught skiing for the past 10 years. “I like working with kids.”

Since he may have a future interest in a position with the district, Sulloway decided to resign, effective June 10.

After being elected for one term as a write-in candidate, Sulloway was elected to a three-year term last year. Bridgton residents will vote for a replacement to fill the remaining two years. He is one of five Bridgton representatives on the board.

“It has been a pleasure working with you, your predecessor and the rest of the board on the challenges and many varied issues that have faced the district over the last four years,” Sulloway wrote in a resignation letter to Superintendent Patrick Phillips. “It is a delicate balance we must strike between providing the most appropriate, beneficial opportunities to the children of our communities and respecting the plight of our taxpayers.”
