Bonny Eagle captured third and Windham placed seventh at Saturday’s Western Maine Class A wrestling meet, held at Noble High School in North Berwick.
A number of wrestlers from both teams qualified for the Class A state meet, scheduled for this Saturday in Augusta. The top four wrestlers in each weight class earned a spot at the state meet.
Massabesic, the two-time defending state champion, won the meet with 243 points, edging runner-up Noble, which had 218.5. Bonny Eagle finished with 176 points, while Westbrook tallied 111. Deering (68.5) rounded out the top five.
Completing the 14-team field were Kennebunk (67), Windham (60), Sanford (50.5), Marshwood (39), Scarborough (39), Biddeford (31), Portland (28), Cape Elizabeth (26) and Thornton Academy (nine).
Bonny Eagle qualified nine wrestlers for the state meet. Dalton Groeger won his championship-round match against Massabesic’s Justin Dumond by a 10-2 major decision to take first place at 130 pounds. Stephen Martin pinned Noble’s Nate Winsor at 1:14 to win at 171. Ryan Cook was runner-up at 119.
Placing third with consolation-round victories for the Scots were Dale Cabral at 103, Patrick Gallant at 125, Kevin Kinehan at 140, Max Alfiero at 160 and Tyler Meikle at 285. Bonny Eagle’s Troy Severance took fourth at 145.
Windham qualified a pair of wrestlers for the state meet. Jacob Greenwood was runner-up at 189, losing in the championship round to Massabesic’s Alex Holland via a pin at 3:30. Patrick Pearson was fourth at 160.
The Eagles’ Dan Bickford finished fifth at 130 and will be an alternate in Augusta.
