In 1840, just like today, Windham kids were getting ready for schools to open. In the Windham Plains neighborhood (Varney Mill Road area), 62 scholars of all ages would attend the school shown here which was on the upper end of Varney Mill Road.
The Windham Plains school in District 13 was 26 feet by 24 feet, one room, and according to the town survey had a capacity of 32 scholars! Overcrowding was a problem, even then. By 1900, the number of scholars was down to 27. Courtesy photo from Windham Historical Society
