A crime spree in Standish during the early morning hours of June 23 has the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department on the lookout for a break-in artist while checking out connections to similar crimes in nearby communities.
The crimes occurred Sunday night into Monday morning and were concentrated in the Pine Tree Trailer Park off Route 25 and on Whites Bridge Road, according to Lt. Donald Foss.
“At last count it looks like we had 11 car burglaries, a burglary to a storage shed, and a stolen vehicle all within that time frame in the town of Standish,” Foss said Wednesday morning.
The burglaries appeared to have involved more than one person, Foss said, and the culprits took mostly loose change, plus a purse and a stereo.
“They were looking for quick cash,” Foss said.
The crimes were similar to burglaries that took place a week earlier in Hollis and Dayton. Foss said his agency is now comparing notes with the Maine State Police, who have arrested three teenagers for the Hollis and Dayton burglaries.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said Wednesday there had been no connection made between the two strings of crimes. Foss said the Sheriff’s Department is comparing notes with the state police investigators to determine if the break-ins are related.
“We’re working with them to see if there are any connections,” Foss said.
Trooper Kevin Rooney said 19-year-old Levi Hanson of Buxton was charged with theft, burglary from a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property. Also charged were two 16-year-old boys from Buxton and Hollis, whose names are not being released because of their age. One boy is charged with burglary and being in violation of his probation, while the second juvenile is charged with receiving stolen property.
Recovered from Hanson’s apartment and his car were a number of items taken including fishing gear, hiking equipment and two satellite radios. The items have been taken to the State Police barracks in Alfred and the owners are being contacted to identify them.
The burglaries in Hollis and Dayton began on the weekend of June 14 and continued through early last week. At least eight people reported thefts from unlocked motor vehicles. Among the missing items were tools, fishing equipment, and a global positioning system receiver.
