Police believe slush and snow caused the accident that killed a 46-year-old Lewiston man Saturday.

Edmilson Quintao died after his Plymouth Voyager crossed over the centerline of Route 35 in Standish at around 9 a.m. Saturday and collided with a S-10 Chevrolet pickup that was traveling north.

“It appears that weather is the contributing factor,” said Chief Deputy Kevin Joyce of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department. He said there are no indications that alcohol played a role.

Joyce said the vehicle was not traveling faster than the posted speed limit. Newer vehicles have a “black box” and Joyce said they will be to find out if Quintao slowed down enough for the weather.

The driver of the pickup, Eric Labreque, 28, of Lake Tahoe, Calif., attempted to stop, according to police, but could not and hit the van broadside.

As a result of the impact, the van caught fire, and Quintao was trapped inside the burning vehicle until he was rescued by members of the Standish Fire Department. He was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he was treated for severe burns. Quintao was pronounced dead a few hours after arriving at the hospital.

Labreque was treated for minor injuries at Maine Medical Center.
