Spaulding Memorial Library

Artist of the month for January is Roby Dyer. Roby is well known in Sebago for her outstanding creative crafts. She is a member of the North Sebago United Methodist Church, where many of us have enjoyed seeing (and buying) her handmade items.

Many young children have worn Roby’s knitted sweaters over the years. This month’s highest bidder will be able to select a size (4-8) and color for Roby, who will then knit a special child-sized cardigan. The starting bid is $25, for the cardigan sweater.

The first book discussion group meeting will be held on the third Monday of the month (Jan. 21). The book being discussed at this meeting is: “Infidel” by Ayaan Ali Hirsi.

Preschool story hour meets at 9:30 a.m. on Fridays. All are welcomed to attend. The theme for Jan. 4 is birds. Jan. 11’s theme is snowy days. There will be no story hour on Jan. 18 or Jan. 25.

Shawnee Peak

I get e-mail updates year-round from nearby Shawnee Peak ski area, located on Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton. As of Dec. 28, 90 percent of the mountain was open. From Sebago, it takes about half an hour to get to the mountain in Bridgton. I am sure the students at Sebago Elementary School’s ski program are very excited about this winter’s possibilities, especially with all the recent snow.

Students in grades 3-6 are transported to the ski resort via school bus. The program allows new skiiers to rent equipment at discounted rates, and they offer lessons as well. We are lucky to live so close to a ski area.

Branch Duckers Snowmobile Club

Last week, I wrote a little about snowmobiling and the local club. I have since learned that the president of the club is Glenn Snow. I am hoping to write more about the history of the club and maybe get some photographs of them and their trails and outings. In the meantime, if you would like more information about the club, or to get a trail map, you may call Glen at 787-8824 or e-mail him at snows105@yahoo.com.
