Seven teams of St. Joseph’s College students recently competed in a cardboard canoe race at the Alfond Center pool on campus. Canoe construction began at 7 p.m. and racing started 8:15 p.m. Prizes were donated by Friendly’s, 5 Star Cinema, and Bon Appetit for best costume, best canoe design and fastest canoe team. At left, junior Ryan Prescott of Pittsfield, N.H., front, and sophomore Joe Vining of Poland, Maine, get that sinking feeling as their cardboard canoe dips below the surface. At right, sophomore Philip Follansbee of Old Orchard Beach constructs his cardboard canoe. His entry represented the chess club on campus. Courtesy photos
