Where is the only place you can find businessmen belly-down on the ice and children chucking Cornish hens? Scarborough’s Winterfest 2007.

After being postponed in January due to the unseasonably warm weather, this year’s Winterfest will take place Sunday, Feb. 18, beginning with the lighting of the bonfire at noon.

Throughout the afternoon, several events will take place. Contests include snow-people building, jump roping, ice skating and cardboard sled racing. Just for fun, there will be a hayride and visits from both Frosty the Snowman and Crackers, the mascot of the Portland Pirates.

Later in the afternoon, some of the more unusual events will occur. The Scarborough Rotary Club sponsors “turkey bowling.” The participants of this game replace traditional bowling balls with frozen Cornish hens, which they “bowl” across the ice at targets. For the “belly buster” contest, participants get a running start and slide on their stomachs across the ice in an attempt to slide farther than their opponents.

While some events may require more guts than others, everyone should be able to enjoy the activities. As always, a king and queen from each grade group (K-2, 3-5 and 6-8) will be determined by points won from the contests. At 3 p.m., the winter royalty will be crowned. Finishing off the afternoon, magician B.J. Hickman will perform in the Wentworth Gym.

Winterfest 2007 is sponsored by Scarborough Community Services. For more information call 730-4198.
