The Gorham Planning Board postponed a request Monday to convert a church building to business use.
Developer Michel Salvaggio is seeking permission to put several businesses in the former School Street United Methodist Church. The church has moved into a new structure at the intersection of Cressey Road and Route 25. A sale of the former church hinges on town approval of Salvaggio’s plans.
But before granting approval for the project, planners are asking Salvaggio to provide a drawing of the building along with more details about signs, runoff water and language in a legal agreement for parking.
The board voted Salvaggio a waiver on parking, reducing the number of required parking spaces from 60 to 18. In a deal with owners of the adjacent 7-Eleven store property, Salvaggio has an agreement allowing construction of the 18 spaces.
Following the meeting, Salvaggio said there are a lot of issues to address in bringing an old building up to code. “I can take care of it tomorrow,” Salvaggio said. “It’s putting all the pieces together.” He said he hopes to be back before the board at its next meeting, Monday, March 12.
Church spokesman Dennis Morton said the delay is a disappointment. “
The board wants to improve downtown and he does, too. He’s got great ideas. He’s going to make it happen,” Morton said.
