Alysa Avery, a Bonny Eagle High School senior, has been selected as the recipient of three Gold Keys in the Regional Program of the Scholastic Art Awards.
All Gold Key recipients’ work will be forwarded to New York for consideration at the national level. Her winning entries were a drawing art portfolio, an untitled mixed media presentation, and a painting called Ansell.
Also a gold medal winner was senior Stephanie Boutin, for Sassy Girl magazine montage. Sophomore Channing Day earned honorable mention for a robot painting in acrylic.
This year’s competition brought 341 submissions from 287 young artists representing 11 middle schools and 36 high schools in Maine. Maine College of Art on Congress Street in Portland will showcase the talents of the artists in the Porteous Building until Jan. 27. The Porteous building is open to the public, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
Gold Key, Silver Key and Merit Award recipients will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Merrill Auditorium on Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. Local awards will include scholarships to MECA’s Early College and Saturday School programs. Gold recipients go on to compete nationally for more than $1,000,000 in scholarships from The Scholastic Art Awards.
