The 21st Century Family Fitness Center opened a women-only section of its health club last month.

“It’s been popular,” General Manager John Booth said Tuesday.

Booth said he opened the females-only room three weeks ago because some women are more comfortable working out in an area isolated from men.

“It wasn’t really asked for,” Booth said. But it got a lot of positive reactions from club members once it opened. Women-only sections are common in gyms, Booth said.

The women-only workout room is located at the end of a hallway on the ground floor of the Family Fitness Center. A sign in the hallway alerts women, and potential trespassers, of its whereabouts.

The room features 10 circuit training machines, stationary devices used for a specific exercise. A suggestion box in the room has inspired Booth to install a stretching area and free-weight section.

Booth admitted to breaking the male ban himself when he installed the stereo system two weeks ago while some women were exercising. He said they didn’t seem to care.
