Westbrook residents will have a chance to speak out about a major retirement community coming to a 53-acre plot between Stroudwater and Spring streets.

Sandy River Health System, operators of the Springbrook Nursing Care Center, will hold a public hearing on their proposed development on Wedmesday, Jan. 3, at the Public Safety Building at 7 p.m. The purpose of the hearing is to give Westbrook residents an opportunity to discuss the development.

Sandy River is proposing a 114-unit development and community center that would be tailored to older, active adults seeking some measure of independence. The development would include single and duplex cottages, larger townhouses and a community center.

Sandy River spokesman Daniel Maguire said Monday that the layout for the development is complete, and the company is working on the design of the homes, which would range in price from the high $200,000s to the mid $300,000s.

He said the homes would be built in a “Maine wood” or “Adirondack” style to fit the character of the land. “It’s a beautiful site, and it’s very wooded,” Maguire said.

The development and community center would complement the existing nursing home for those needing full-time care. Construction would also include a public through street connecting Spring and Stroudwater streets and six private driveways.

Some in the city have expressed concerns over whether the development would add to the already congested traffic on Spring Street.

However, the Westbrook City Council approved a zone change to allow the development in the beginning of the year. Maguire said that Sandy River has been collaborating with the committee set up to oversee development of a possible new junior high school on Stroudwater Street to address sewer issues.

A public hearing on a proposed 114-unit retirement community in Westbrook will be held Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m., at the Public Safety Building.
