Even if I wanted to go deer hunting this month, there absolutely is no time, but Sawyer’s Variety Store in Little Falls reports 119 deer tagged, though, so someone is out there!
I went to the Food Pantry last Thursday morning (special hours 9-11 a.m. for seniors!) and found a group of women making holiday plans for the community. I had my pad of paper out and started making notes, because with all that’s going on in November, I didn’t want to miss a thing.
The folks on the Human Services Committee try very hard to make sure that no Windham family goes without at Thanksgiving and Christmas. They distribute more than 150 “baskets” each for the two holiday meals, and expect there will be more this year. Financial donations are vital, to make sure enough turkeys and other necessities can be obtained. Call 892-1931 for more information or just stop by at the little building next to the Public Safety Building on Thursday morning, 9 to 11 a.m. or Mondays from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Nov. 8 is the deadline to order your Christmas wreath from Windham Christian Academy. prices are $16 for a 12″ and $20 for 20″, they are double-sided with red velvet bows, and orders can be picked up the week of Thanksgiving at the school, 1051 Roosevelt Trail on Monday and Tuesday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. $1 from each wreath will be donated to the Food Pantry. Call 892-2244 to place your order.
Saturday, Nov. 11 the annual Veterans Day Celebration takes place at 11 a.m. at the Windham Veterans Center, back of the Windham Mall. There will be a dedication ceremony of 11 stone benches purchased by individuals and families to honor Windham veterans. Refreshments will follow the ceremony and the public is invited.
Also on Nov. 11, a Holiday Fair will be held at Windham Hill Church with many local groups presenting crafts, fudge, jams and jellies, mini-pies, woodworking, holiday baskets, wreaths, decorations, knit goods and much more. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pick up one of the new church cookbooks! A lunch will be available, too.
On Nov. 12 at noon the postponed (rained out) Cemetery Tour will take place; plan to meet at the Historical Society at noon if you’re among this group.
Nov. 18 the Windham Historical Society will hold an Open House at its main museum at 234 Windham Center Road. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Here’s an opportunity to purchase a unique gift you won’t find anywhere else. The Society offers 100 percent cotton coverlets in three colors on an ecru background. They feature drawings of many historic Windham buildings including the original town hall, covered bridge, old fort and more. Commemorative coins in silver, pewter or bronze will be on the sale table as well as a variety of note paper, 8×10 photos suitable for framing, books, maps, key chains, magnets and more. Stop in on your way to or from the library book sale! Enjoy free refreshments, check out the displays and take a look at our most recent gift from Windham third graders – a quilt featuring their own poetry and drawings from their history tour.
Books and baked goods will be on sale at the Windham Public Library on Sat., Nov. 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lots of kids books as well as adults and all kinds of homebaked goodies. Stock up on your winter reading material at bargain prices ranging from 25 cents to $1.
That should keep us busy for awhile, but if brother Russ brings some deer meat, we will definitely find time to cook it!
See you next week.
