Windham police seized more than $9,000 from a man’s car after a police K-9 reacted to the scent of it.

At 12:13 a.m. on Sept. 29, Officer Berry Kelly pulled over a vehicle traveling on Route 302 near Whites Bridge Road.

“The car was pulled over for erratic operation,” Lt. David DeGruchy said.

During the early Saturday morning stop, Kelly asked if he could search the vehicle after speaking with the driver. The driver complied, whereupon the officer discovered four rolls of money totaling $9,100. Kelly asked the man why he was carrying so much money.

Much of the information pertaining to questioning is still being withheld, as no arrest has yet been made.

“Officer Kelly found four rolls of cash, wrapped separately,” DeGruchy said.

The police then used a drug sniffing dog, who reacted to the money. At that point, the police told the driver he was going to have to seize the cash for further investigation.

“These dogs are certified on a yearly basis, and trained weekly in all aspects which the dog will be used. A dog has to keep up its performance. They get worked pretty hard, so those that aren’t up to it are weeded out pretty early on,” DeGruchy said.

The police have filed the case with the U.S. Attorney’s office, which will decide any future actions regarding the matter. No drug residue tests have yet been performed on the money or any other materials found in the vehicle.

“It’s not like they go barking at a wrapper that once held a peanut butter sandwich. They react to what they’ve been trained to react to,” DeGruchy said.

“The driver willingly accompanied police down to the public safety building, where he was given a receipt for the money,” DeGruchy added. “He offered to go down to the station. He was not arrested.”

Because no arrest has been made, the name of the driver along with his testimony cannot be released to the public.
