READING, Pa. — Remember the last time a hotshot 20-year-old-shortstop joined the Portland Sea Dogs? Everyone was happy to see Hanley Ramirez in August 2004. Everyone but Kenny Perez. “It’s a disappointment,” Perez said back then. Perez wasn’t begrudging Ramirez, just unhappy about moving from shortstop to second base. Perez complained he always had been […]
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.
Dogs fail in clutch, suffer loss
Portland loads the bases twice with two outs but doesn’t come through in a 4-1 setback.
Reading scores late to defeat Sea Dogs
The Phillies collect two runs in the eighth inning against closer Bryce Cox for a 7-5 victory.
A strong opening act
Ryan Kalish homers to lead off the season, and the Sea Dogs strut their power at Reading.
On Baseball: Getting his game together, and head together
READING, Pa. — Felix Doubront, who started here Thursday night, could see Fenway Park sometime this year. After tonight, the Red Sox will roll out pitching prospects Kyle Weiland, Stephen Fife and Casey Kelly. As for tonight, the Sea Dogs will start Ryne Miller. Look on the Red Sox prospect list. He’s not there. A […]
Sea Dogs start what may be a big season
Portland, which will open tonight at Reading, is starting the season with plenty of prospects.
On Baseball: An impressive debut for Lackey at Fenway
BOSTON — Having already thrown 98 pitches, he would face one more batter, with two runners on, one out in the sixth inning and Boston leading, 1-0. Guy named Alex Rodriguez came to bat. This is why John Henry signs those sizable checks, paid to the order of John Lackey. Lackey, 31, the man to […]
Kevin Thomas: Working his way back, a pitch at a time
PORTLAND – Reporters bumped into each other in the Portland Sea Dogs’ clubhouse for the annual media day Tuesday. Some lockers got more crowded than others, with microphones surrounding the faces of pitcher Casey Kelly and shortstop Jose Iglesias. They and a number of other Sea Dogs arrived in Portland earlier this week with the […]
Kevin Thomas: Youkilis preaches consistency
BOSTON – After an emotional 9-7 opening-day win over the New York Yankees Sunday night, Kevin Youkilis walked into the postgame press conference like a member of the board of directors laying out the bottom line. “This is just one game,” Youkilis said matter of factly. But, asked one questioner, wasn’t this so much more, […]
On Baseball: A fitting start to a long grind
BOSTON — On Easter morning, Terry Francona felt fidgety and found his way to Fenway Park. “I got here way too early,” Francona said before Sunday’s season opener between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. “The feeling is always the same. There is a lot of excitement. There’s a lot of anxiety.” […]
