Kyle Weiland of the Sea Dogs looks sharp at times, but also gives up too many big blasts in a loss.
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.

Sea Dogs Notebook: Not your traditional catch
PORTLAND – The dirtiest uniform after Thursday’s home opener at Hadlock Field belonged to the pitcher. Kyle Weiland became a dirt dog in the second inning. Reid Gorecki tried to bunt but popped it up toward the third-base line. Weiland bolted for the ball, dove, belly-flopped on the infield dirt and made the catch. Nice […]

On Baseball: Another talented shortstop means another move
READING, Pa. — Remember the last time a hotshot 20-year-old-shortstop joined the Portland Sea Dogs? Everyone was happy to see Hanley Ramirez in August 2004. Everyone but Kenny Perez. “It’s a disappointment,” Perez said back then. Perez wasn’t begrudging Ramirez, just unhappy about moving from shortstop to second base. Perez complained he always had been […]
