Susan’s Fish-n-Chips, a Portland institution that launched in 1989, announced on social media Friday that it will close for good at the end of the month.

In a Facebook post, owner Susan Eklund cited rising costs as the culprit. “We are saddened to have to close but times have changed the cost of products,” she wrote, adding that “the increase in wages and the overall costs make it very difficult.”

Reached for comment Friday afternoon, Eklund said she was forced to raise menu prices three months ago “and it broke my heart.”

“It’s very important for me that middle class people be able to enjoy a meal too,” she added. “My goal when I opened was to sell food and not make so much profit, but make people happy. It’s worked for 36 years. But right now, it’s too much — I can’t do it.”

Eklund said Susan’s, located near Morrill’s Corner at 1135 Forest Ave., will close Oct. 30. The restaurant specializes in fried seafood meals at affordable prices, with weekly specials like two fish burgers for $2.50.
